I was a member of the Bangor, Maine Police Department, retiring after 25 years of service. I served as their Community Relations Officer during the majority of this time. I was an Active DARE Instructor for 19 years and have taught literally thousands of children.
I served six years on the Maine DARE Officers Association Board and in July of 2000 I completed a four year term on the National DARE Association Board, serving as their President in 1999. I have been a DARE Mentor for 16 years and I have mentored or facilitated in more than 50 DARE Officer trainings in the United States and Canada.
I have traveled extensively giving this presentation over 665 times to parent groups, PTA’s, school in-service trainings, SRO and DARE Officer training conferences and training schools. I have been invited back to the same locations on several occasions and have spoken to audiences of as many as 1400 people.
As a retired Police/DARE Officer and a father of four children, this topic holds a special interest to me. I have discussed this topic with a wide variety of people including children, teenagers, parents and other care givers, educators, fellow officers, psychologists and members of the U.S. House and Senate.
